AbstractThe method of intermediate problems is adopted to calculate the lower and upper bounds to the photonic band gap edges. Lower bounds, supplemented with the Rayleigh-Ritz approximations, enable one to determine a band gap with arbitrary accuracy. For the upper bounds, the Rayleigh-Ritz method is more attractive then the method of intermediate problems.
