AbstractA surface composed of a lattice of small cavities can support the propagation of air‐coupled surface waves. Energy is localized near the surface and, since the sound pressure near the surface can be greater than if the surface was rigid, passive amplification is obtained. By restricting the lattice of cavities to a strip of finite width embedded in an otherwise rigid surface, the amplification depends on the direction of the incident sound. Thus directional receivers can be designed. These directional receivers can provide more amplification than would be obtained with a semi‐infinite lattice of cavities. In this paper, we will discuss various ways in which strips of finite impedance can be configured to enhance the amplification (and directivity) properties of surface waves. Experiments were carried out on a model surface and the measurements are compared with numerical results obtained using a boundary element method.
