AbstractThe authors investigated a photomechanical effect in some ionic crystals (NaCl, KCl and LiF), i.e. a decrease in microhardness under the effect of illumination. This decrease is as great as 30% in NaCl, 25% in KCl, 28% in LiF. The effect is explained by the change in mobility of marginal dislocations on illuminating the crystals.
