AbstractA method is described of indexing positions on a magnetic tape recording so that, on playback, any selected indexed position may be located with a positional error of less than one inch of tape for index numbers up to 1024. The system utilizes groups of square waves, each group having a number of cycles determined by the index number assigned. When read, only groups having the desired number of cycles are accepted; when this occurs, an electrical signal is generated and used to initiate read-out from other tape channels. The circuit given is readily adatable to any tape speed, or to a greater or lesser number of indices, as required, and can be used to locate the indexed positions with the tape travelling in either the forward or reverse direction.
