AbstractWind-induced vibrations in multi-storey buildings are utilized to determine foundation stiffnesses as well as structural modal properties. Two methods are presented which permit the determination of foundation stiffnesses, both rocking and in the horizontal direction, by combining experimental data with theoretical calculations. One method employs modal frequency ratios for the entire system; the other employs modal amplitude ratios. A quantitative assessment of the restraint on a large raft foundation of a 12 storey reinforced concrete building is given.
