Superfluid 4He: Just a Very Cold Liquid?

AbstractWe present a unified description of the dynamic response of superfluid ^4He using perturbation theory. We show that the characteristic features of the ^4He inelastic neutron scattering spectra at Tsim1 K can be fully described by considering only density fluctuations. We also discuss how the response changes when the temperature is raised through the superfluid phase to the normal-fluid phase, and we argue that these changes principally reflect the behavior expected because of the Bose statistics obeyed by all the ^4He atoms rather than being effects of the depletion of the Bose condensate.
