AbstractGeneral information is collected relevant to the factors governing the mechanical behavior of building sealants on a theoretical level. Sealants should have rubbery elasticity at all working temperatures to perform satisfactorily in building joints. The implications of the theory of rubbery elasticity for sealants are outlined. Emphasis is given to stress relaxation experiments as a versatile tool of investigating the mechanical behavior of sealants. In the second part of the paper, information on weathering is presented in view of the long working life expected of sealants.
