AbstractAs the tools for the construction of detailed models of environments evolve, the need for visualization and interaction in a shared context is emerging. This paper presents DIMENSION, a new adaptive technological platform that allows several distant groups of users to dynamically interact, in a multimedia fashion, around detailed digital 3D models of objects and environments. It also describes a set of technologies based on this infrastructure and specifically applied to the collaborative exploration of models of cultural heritage sites: multi-resolution representation and display of scene geometry, video communication that exploits graphics hardware, foveated stereoscopic display, and laser-based interaction with a large screen display.
