AbstractThree new evaluation techniques have been assessed for their ability to determine just how corroded tendons inside unbonded, post-tensioned (PT) systems are. Since these tendons are not openly visible, the evaluation techniques are all indirect. Because corrosion can cause strands of the tendons to snap, one technique monitors the occurrence of that particular noise. In another technique, some air from inside the sheath surrounding the tendon is withdrawn and tested for moisture. The premise is that where there is moisture near steel, there must be rust. The third method uses a transceiver to send signals along the tendon. The returned signal patterns are then analyzed. Two methods proved quite unsatisfactory.
