AbstractAvailable literature on the problem of establishing reliable, permanent bench marks in permafrost areas is reviewed. The factors that influence stability are noted and some of the methods devised to provide reliable bench marks are described. Finally, the design, installation and performance of a bench mark used in the north of Canada by the Division of Building Research is described in detail.
