AbstractWhen can a concrete structure be considered durable? In one way, one can say it is durable when it is able to sustain the serviceability for which it was designed. A prospective view would be to say that a durable concrete is the reward for heeding all six axioms: 1) match the materials to the environment; 2) combine only materials with similar properties; 3) assess the limitations of a particular material in its functional context; 4) protect materials from general deterioration; 5) allow for change in use in the design; and 6) provide regular maintenance through routine repair. Axioms can be a tall order but in this case they pay off.
