AbstractAdvances in FT-IR instrumentation have resulted in the routine acquisition of infrared absorption spectra with signal-to-noise ratios in excess of 10,000. There are mathematical procedures that can make use of this high signal-to-noise ratio to calculate spectroscopic parameters of prime importance to the spectroscopist: the positions and intensities of individual absorption bands. In this manuscript we describe, in theory and practice, two such techniques, Fourier self-deconvolution and Fourier derivation, both of which achieve band-narrowing at the expense of the signal-to-noise ratio.
