AbstractThis research analyzed hourly United States weather data to determine wind-driven rain loads for assessing the ability of wall systems to resist water intrusion. Rainfall and wind-driven rain values were developed for Boston, Miami, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and Seattle. The work also produced a methodology for generating rates of water spray impinging on and pressure differences acting across test wall assemblies. The methodology can also be used by designers to: (i) determine the response of a wall assembly to wind-driven rain; (ii) estimate design loads below which adverse effects on an assembly are minimized; (iii) assess the likelihood and degree of damage to an assembly when design loads are exceeded; and, (iv) estimate the long-term performance of a wall assembly based on it?s water-tightness and moisture management.
