AbstractThe effective stress shear strength parameters of a sensitive clay are subject to a wide degree of interpretation because the pore water pressure does not reach equilibrium at maximum stress. A simple method of obtaining shear strength in terms of fundamental parameters, believed to be equal to Hvorslev's true parameters, is described. A revised interpretation of true cohesion for undrained tests is developed. Water content variation during the test is discussed, and the mechanism of friction and cohesion is related to degree of deformation.
