AbstractFrost action in soil results from a critical change in temperature at some depth below the surface. Any study of frost action therefore, must be closely linked with a detailed study of the variation of temperature in soil at increasing epth below the surface and throughout the cycle of the year. This basic characteristic of soil in place might appear at first sight to be a relatively simple matter. Due, however, to the many variable factors involved, not the least of which is the character of the soil in question, the problem is actually most complex.
