AbstractThis paper describes the results of measuring statistical distributions of speech and noise levels to rate and predict the privacy of closed rooms. The degree of privacy depends on the audibility or intelligibility of conversations in adjoining spaces and is influenced not only by the passive sound insulation of a closed room, but also on the levels of speech and background noise. Although the sound insulation is a fixed physical quantity that can be measured, speech and noise levels fluctuate from moment to moment and are therefore statistical quantities. The paper assesses the degree of privacy based on risk, where a particular level of sound insulation is associated with a certain probability of a privacy lapse, when speech levels are high and/or background noise levels are low.
