AbstractAlkali cations in cement exist either as soluble sulfates or in the major clinker phases, such as tricalcium aluminate and dicalcium silicate. In the initial stages of hydration of cement they are present as Na and K sulfates in solution. Subsequently, the solution acquires as many hydroxyl ions as the combinedconcentration of K and Na ions. In a cement with a high alkali content the OH concentration may be about 15times greater than that of the saturated Ca(OHh)2.
