AbstractHard-burned MgO and CaO cause volume expansion in hardened cements. Particle size of these oxides, their distribution in the cement matrix and amount present in cement determine the degree of expansion. Addition of pozzolanas reduces expansion, but the mechanism responsible for this effect is not clear. The autoclave method of testing soundness of cements does not reflect the hydration processes occurring under practical exposure conditions.
