AbstractThis paper presents the results of two investigations made on the failures of clay embankments on saturated highly plastic clay foundations. The studies indicate that conventional quick shear test results applied in a total stress analysis can give safety factors greater than actually exist. Effective stress analyses utilizing estimated pore pressures may also give safety factors greater than unity for failure conditions.
