AbstractPolymer-based materials are being widely used in the building industry in various forms such as coatings, membranes, adhesives, sealants, etc. As is well known, these materials can be 'tailored' by the formulator to suit various applications. In this paper, the author describes the specific mechanisms of degradation that a polymer based material can be subjected to and the consequent defects. He argues that to assure predictable performance, the designer must have a good knowledge and understanding of the properties of polymers, how the materials will interact with the environment in service, and a clear description of maintenance procedures and intervals.
