AbstractIn previous papers, the authors have investigated the breakdown of anodically formed nickel oxide films on open circuit in pH 2.8 Na2SO4 solutions. In this note, experiments are described which support the mechanism of local breakdown at defect sites in the oxide and subsequent undermining of the remaining oxide film. These include an electron-optical examination of the surface for pits, measurement of the surface activity and both cathodic and anodic galvanostatic experiments.
