AbstractThis report describes the development of a test methodology for escort tugs using vertical axis propellers, typified by those produced by Voith Hydro Schiffstechnik. The objective of this project was to develop a model test method at IMD to predict the performance of escort tugs fitted with vertical axis propellers. The measured forces and moments were used to predict the steering and braking performance of the tug over its operating speed range. The predicted forces can be included in IMD's maneuvering simulations, to give performance of the tug-tanker-towrope system.
