AbstractThe low density of magnesium alloys makes them attractive for aerospace and automotive applications. In order to further improve the high temperature strength of the magnesium alloys, Ti6Al4V particles were added to an AM60B magnesium alloy to form a composite through melting and hot isostatic pressing. Increasing the Ti6Al4V content from 0 to 5 vol.%, however, produced no beneficial effect on tensile strengths at room temperature, but reduced the ductility. The pores existing between the matrix and Ti6Al4V particles in the as cast conditions, along with the segregation of Mn5Al8 intermetallic particles at the Ti6Al4V/matrix interface are believed to be responsible for the changes in mechanical properties.
