AbstractThree strategies for achieving acceptable indoor air quality are ventilation, source control and cleaning/filtration. The performance and energy efficiency of a ventilation system is affected by air distribution, air leakage and local exhaust. Wind blowing around and over a building can play havoc with air distribution. Air leakage can waste much energy. Where a contaminant source such as a photocopier is present, a local exhaust has to be installed, because in such circumstances ventilation alone cannot ensure acceptable air quality. For office buildings and schools, in which occupancy varies over a 24-hour period, demand-control ventilation based on C02 levels may work well.
