AbstractStandard fire endurance tests, following the procedures described in ASTM E119, were conducted on six concrete block walls with 3/8 in. and 1/2 in. thick gypsum wallboard finishes on one or both faces. The results suggest that the fire endurance of 4 in. and 6 in. block walls can be doubled by the judicious use of gypsum wallboard protection. Two methods of estimating the contribution of gypsum wallboard to the fire endurance of masonry walls with reasonable accuracy are proposed.
