AbstractThe behaviour of a steel assembly in fire can be significantly affected by the details of its structural support, in particular by restraint. Recognition of this fact led to the introduction of different fire resistance ratings for restrained and unrestrained floor and beam assemblies. Research has led to an understanding of the mechanism of thermal restraint in fire tests. This note describes the mechanism and explains the difference between fire resistance ratings for restrained and unrestrained assemblies.
