AbstractThe physical state of membranes in the bacterium Acholeplasma laidlawii was investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy. A comparison of the temperature dependence of the infrared spectra of live and lifeless Acholeplasma laidlawii cells reveals that at the temperature of growth, i.e., 37°C, the membranes of live cells have a considerably higher degree of conformational disorder. Furthermore, the thermal response of membranes in live and lifeless cells, as monitored by various infrared spectra parameters, is shown to be quite different.
