Abstracttert-Butoxyl abstracts hydrogen from M-H bonds (M = Si, Ge, Sn) with rate constants (300 K) of (0.6-2) × 10 7 (M = Si), ∼9 × 10 7 (M = Ge), and (2-4) × 10 8 M -1 s -1 (M = Sn), respectively. The radicals (alkyl) 3M· show a strong absorption band at λ < 300 nm and a weaker band/shoulder at longer λ that shifts from 320 (M = C) to 390 nm (M = Sn). The spectra of Ph 3M show little sensitivity to the heteroatom. Arylsilyl radicals add readily to their precursors; for example, Ph 3Si· adds to Ph 3SiH with k 4 = (2.1 × 0.4) × 10 5 M -1 s -1 at 300 K.
