AbstractMethodology has been developed to separate amporphous solids from Syncrude fine tailings. The separated solids have been characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, XPS, SEM, infrared spectroscopy, density, and surface area measurements. Based on the results of infraraed and X-ray diffraction the minerals identified in these solids included kaolinite, quartz, mica, allophanes, amorphous alumina, iron oxides and amorphous silica.
