AbstractAn investigation is made of the effect of changing the stiffness distribution up the height of a linear shear framed structure when subjected to idealized earthquake motions. The mean value of the largest strains arising in successive earthquakes is determined together with the associated probability distribution. It appears that the chances of finding a strain value greater than twice the mean are very small.
