AbstractToxic gases and vapors produced from fire are responsible for a large number of fire deaths. The potential danger caused by toxic combustion products may be increasing because of the increasing use of new materials. For the purpose of evaluating and comparing the potential danger from toxic gases produced by combustion of materials, " maximum toxicity index" is proposed. The maximum toxicity index of a material is calculated from experimental data on the quantity of toxic combustion products and the lethal concentration of the products.
