AbstractThe paper presents a case history of the design, construction, and peformance of foundations and earthwork for the Squaw Rapids Hydro-Electric Development. This project located in northern Saskatchewan, includes an earthfill dam, a concrete spillway, a large power canal, and a powerhouse. A unique feature of the project is that all structures, including the 100-ft high spillway section, are founded on soil. Site conditions, their significance with respect to design, and the principal features of design and construction are described in the paper. All structures were instrumented to determine their behaviour and to assess the performance of the many special features incorporated in the design. Observations of settlement, alignment, pore pressure, and seepage were taken during and following construction. These observations are summarized and presented in the paper.
