AbstractResults are presented of the application of the Canadian Ice Regime Shipping Control System (IRSCS) to the Northern Sea Route (NSR). In general, it is concluded that the IRSCS would be a good tool for the NSR, because it considers actual ice conditions which can vary widely both inter- and intra-annually. Preliminary results are given for the minimum Class (or Type) of vessel needed for a safe passage through the NSR at four times of the year, between 1987 and 1990.
