AbstractThe need for resilient transportation infrastructure requires the use of approaches that take into account the requirements for highway bridges with long service life, adequate structural robustness, minimum traffic disruption and cost over their life cycles. This paper introduces three measures of bridge resilience: (i) service life; (ii) structural robustness; and (iii) life cycle cost, which can be used for the design and management of highway bridges. An example illustrates how different design and rehabilitation approaches can contribute to achieve resilient design of highway bridge structures.
