AbstractThis study describes the implementation of a directional source biasing (DSB) scheme for efficiently simulating Cobalt-60 treatment heads using the BEAMnrc Monte Carlo code. Pre-10 vious simulation of Co-60 beams with BEAMnrc were impractical because of the time required to track photons not directed into the treatment field as well as secondary charged particles (> 100 hours on 15 1.8 GHz CPU's to obtain < 0.1% uncertainty on doses in 0.5 em x 0.5 em x 0.5 em voxels in water).
