AbstractThis paper discusses the fundamental mechanisms of earth pressure development on structures. Emphasis is given to the importance of the strain distribution and the extent of the rupture pattern which area function of the wall displacement. Therefore, a variable resistance is mobilized along the rupture lines. A method of evaluation of the total resistance by utilizing an equivalent average for the mobilized resistanceis proposed and illustrated by interpretation of published model test results.
