AbstractThe reaction of Cd(3 P 1) with propane has been investigated at 300°C under such conditions that the rates of production of hydrogen and methane are independent of time. The quantum yield of hydrogen production, when corrected for incomplete quenching, is close to unity and is approximately independent of the substrate pressure. The production of methane can be accounted for by the decomposition of propyl radicals. The ratio CH4/H2 increases with decreasing pressure of propane; if this ratio varies as I a −½ (as is the case when the methyl radicals are produced by the thermal decomposition of propyl radicals), the increase may be ascribed to the decreasing absorbed intensity at lower pressures.
