AbstractThis paper describes results of a laboratory investigation of the volume changes associated with water content changes in clay soils. Shrinkage was studied in relation to total volume change and degree of saturation. Swelling on rewetting was measured to determine the total amount of regain and the factors such as arrangement and cementing between clay particles which control this regain. This work is part of a broader program of field studies of volume changes in Canadian soils.
