SubjectIce; risk analysis; ice-structure interaction
AbstractAn established methodology for risk/reliability analysis of load bearing brittle materials has been applied to ice. A measure at the rate of crack growth was sought, and a measure of the scatter in ice strength obtained. The predictions of the analysis directly contradict experimental experience with ice, and is inapplicable. Risk analysis can be done with ice strength statistics only.
