AbstractObservations of the thermal properties and phase composition of a coarse, expanded-clay, lightweight aggregate for both laboratory and field studies are reported. Results from one- dimensional finite computer simulations performed on model embankments of different stratigraphic configurations comprising lightweight aggregate at different degrees of saturation are also reported.
