AbstractA parametric study using the distinct element method is carried out to investigate the ship/ice interaction for close pack ice with an initial compactness of 7 tenths and an average floe size of 7m. The computation is limited to the two-dimensional case: that means the vertical motion due to ocean waves is neglected. The effect of various factors upon the expected level of ice forces on ships under different conditions is studied in detail.
