AbstractThe cold-weather thermal performace of frame walls with highly conductive framing members is difficult to determine accurately with existing calculation methods. A number of steel-stud walls were, therefore, investigated in laboratory tests; the over-all thermal resistance and the inside surface temperature characteristic, indicative of the potential for condensation and dust marking problems, were determined. The thickness of the outer wall sheathing, the thickness of the insulation, and the location of the insulation in the stud space were varied to determine their effect on performance. The performance of the steel walls determined experimentally were compared with the calculated performance.
