AbstractA series of experiments, one with identical specimens on different test machines and the other with specimens of varying geometry on the same machine, were carried out to show that test system stiffness affects both pre-yield behaviour and failure mode in ice. Ice strength was found to be a function of test system stiffness if results were analyzed on the usual nominal strain rate basis. The implication of this finding on both laboratory testing and the interaction between floating ice and structure are discussed.
