Feasibility trials on boar HMCS Bonaventure for reception of automatic picture transmissions from meteorological satellites

AbstractTrials were conducted on board the aircraft carrier HMCS Bonaventure to determine the feasibility of receiving cloud-cover pictures from meteorological satellites carrying the Automatic Picture Transmission (APT) system. Initial trials, conducted without an APT satellite in orbit, involved the reception of simulated signals with an omnidirectional antenna and with a Yagi antenna of 8 db gain, as well as noise measurements, and the reception of Alouette I with the Yagi antenna. The results indicated that the omnidirectional antenna was unsuitable. With the Yagi, however, conflicting results were obtained in the three initial trials, but a marginal system for APT reception was indicated. Further tests conducted after the laungh of ESSA II confirmed that recognizable cloud-cover pictures could be obtained using the Yagi antenna, but that interference generated in the ship obscured the fine picture detail. Simple post-detection filtering reduced the apparent interference, but picture detail was not recovered. In the recommendations for further trials, it is suggested that noise-suppression techniques be tried to improve the picture quality, before resorting to an antenna of significantly greater size.
