AbstractMany house fires in Canada originate from soot fires in chimneys and smokepipes. Fire statistics published annually by provincial fire marshals give the number of such fires and losses resulting from them but do not indicate structural details of houses, chimneys, and heating systems. The results of field observations, together with information obtained from laboratory examination of typical chimney deposits are now reported.
